Seniors honoured around town this week

As proclaimed by Mayor Jeff Genung and town council, June 2-8 is Seniors Weeks in Cochrane.

As proclaimed by Mayor Jeff Genung and town council, June 2-8 is Seniors’ Week in Cochrane.

As such, seniors around town were honoured in a number of ways – including raising awareness on World Elder Abuse Awareness Day, which is on June 15 but is being celebrated by the Town of Cochrane Friday, June 14 at the Cochrane Legion from 10:30 a.m.-1:45 p.m. Those attending the event, which includes beef on a bun lunch, a presentation of Financial Abuse Awareness and an awareness walk, are encouraged to wear purple.

Earlier this week, the Elder Abuse Committee held a lilac tree planting ceremony at Frank Wills Memorial Hall.

Annemarie Tocher with Cochrane Family and Community Support Services (FCSS) said that the work of the Elder Abuse Committee is two fold – to raise awareness about elder abuse and how to recognize it, as well as to create a coordinated response in Cochrane and area through the development of  Community Led Elder Abuse Response (CLEAR), funded through the Resource Centre.

An update on CLEAR will be delivered at the Legion event, as the strategy looks to develop a strategy of response through the collaboration of stakeholders in the community.
