This week, Cochrane's 55-plus community has taken to the ice for its "Super Seniors" bonspiel — the largest of its kind in southern Alberta.

With 49 teams taking part, 2022 marks the 11th year the tournament has taken place.

Of the 49 teams, 42 are four-person teams and seven are two-person "sturling" teams.

Cochrane is represented by 24 teams, said bonspiel coordinator Douglas Campbell.

Other competitors include teams from Canmore, Black Diamond, High River, Okotoks, Springbank, Bragg Creek, Airdrie and Carstairs, as well as 14 teams from Calgary.

Participants in the bonspiel must be over the age of 50 — the age a "senior curler" is defined by in Canada — and they're divided by skill level and age to ensure fair play.

Games will continue throughout today and Saturday, with draws starting at 8 a.m., 10:30 a.m., 1:15 p.m. and 3:45 p.m.

A banquet is also to be held this evening at the curling club.
