The Robillard Brothers North American Mustang IV, manufactured in 1944, was described by Vintage Wings of Canada pilot Todd Lemieux as one of the most impressive fighter aircrafts in the Second World War.

The summer of 2012 saw two long-lost Albertans reunited with their home province. Now, the pair is safely tucked into their hangar at the Springbank Airport.

The Robillard Brothers North American Mustang IV (P-51D) and the Boeing PT-27 Harry Hannah Stearman — both restored Second World War aircrafts — are now based outside of Calgary as part of Vintage Wings of Canada, a not-for-profit group aimed at honouring heritage aircrafts, and educating and engaging Canadians.

The two-seater Stearman was used to train inexperienced pilots near Bowden, while the Mustang IV was based in Calgary, said Todd Lemieux, a pilot and board member of Vintage Wings of Canada.

“It’s fitting they came back to Alberta,” said Lemieux, gesturing at the two planes resting in the hanger at Vintage Wings West. “So much of their history is based here.”

Their history will be on display throughout 2013, with a flying season that will include local sponsorship flights, air shows and a stop or two on the 2013 Across Canada Air Cadet Tribute. The tribute tour is slated to stop at eight Canadian locations, from Victoria, B.C., to Debert, N.S.

“It started out with us getting together to do air shows, but it’s grown so much,” said Lemieux. “It’s turned into engaging our youth and creating better Canadians.”

At each of the locations, local air cadets will have a chance to learn about the history of the aircrafts, as well as go for a ride with one of the volunteer pilots. With pilots that include astronaut and former air force pilot Chris Hadfield, Lemieux is certain the youth will be in excellent hands.

“The kids get to talk and fly with true role models,” he said. “And the kids just blossom. They like the romance of flying, they like the technology and the movies. Opportunities like this spark an interest.”
