The Stoney Nakoda Food Bank Society held their annual general meeting Oct. 26.

It was a time for not only housekeeping items, but for the society to welcome the addition of long-time volunteer, Jo Siedel as a director.

“The board members are thrilled to have Jo on the board, as she has tremendous experience to bring to the Nakoda Food Bank,” said treasurer, Cindy Overland.

Other issues that were addressed at the meeting included the ongoing financial considerations of keeping up with growing demands at both Nakoda Food Bank locations — in Morley and Eden Valley, as well as getting food to those living in the very remote community of Big Horn.

“The Big Horn food bank is not operational yet, as the board has many obstacles to overcome with finding adequate facility space available, as well as the cost of renovations to the space to accommodate food transport, storage and hamper distribution,” said Overland.

A priority for the Morley location over the next year is to get financing in place for a much-needed expansion of the facility; the Morley food bank delivers an average of 65 food hampers a day.

“. . . to include refrigeration and the ability to separate the loading area from the general population for safety concerns,” explained Overland, expressing that the board would very much like to be able to provide more fresh and frozen options, but do not currently have the fridge and freezer space to do so.

The board is also looking forward to a busy fall and winter season and are grateful to be back with the Canmore Christmas Spirit Campaign again.

“Our acting manager, (Belinda Simeon) has been invited by the Canmore Christmas Spirit Society once again and this organization is generously including the Stoney Nation in their Christmas food drive,” said Overland. “There are some changes this year, as toys for the clients will not be a part of this program this year.”

Simeon is currently looking for other opportunities to collect toys for families in need.

The board also acknowledged the vast contributions made by various Cochrane and Canmore volunteer and faith organizations.

With respect to the need for current non-perishable food donations, the Stoney Nakoda Food Bank is looking for protein foods, such as peanut butter, canned meats and sardines.

The current board includes Adele Rabbitt (director), Joyce Ball (secretary), Shanda Hunter (vice-chair), Melissa Chiniquay (chair), Jo Siedel (director) and Cindy Overland (treasurer).
