“CP advised that there was a male in medical distress on the tracks. It is believed he was hit by an earlier train, not the one that actually passed by and reported seeing him," said RCMP Corporal Tammy Keibel.

STONEY NAKODA – A man in his 20s struck by a train at Stoney Nakoda is fighting for his life in a Calgary hospital.

Canadian Pacific Railway train engineers reported a man lying near the railway tracks at about 1:45 p.m. on Monday (Oct. 4), just north of the Trans-Canada Highway near Highway 40 interchange. It is believed he was struck by another train earlier in the day.

Police and EMS officials say the man was transported by STARS air ambulance to Foothills Hospital in Calgary in critical condition as a result of his traumatic injuries.

“CP advised that there was a male in medical distress on the tracks,” said RCMP Corporal Tammy Keibel of RCMP K Division’s media relations department.

“It is believed he was hit by an earlier train, not the one that actually passed by and reported seeing him.”

A spokesperson for Alberta EMS said ambulances were dispatched from the Canmore and Stoney Nakoda area, but ultimately STARS air ambulance flew the badly injured man to hospital.

“He was in serious and potentially life-threatening condition as a result of injuries that were believed to have sustained by a train,” said Stuart Brideaux, a spokesperson for Alberta EMS.

Brideaux said the train that called in the emergency stopped the train, with crews racing back down the line on foot to help the man.

“It’s not specifically known what happened, because it was unwitnessed,” he said.

CP and RCMP continue to investigate.
