2012: A year in Cochrane sports achievement

JANUARY * After going 5-0-1 en route to the final of the Mac’s AAA Midget world invitational hockey tournament in Calgary, UFA Bisons of Strathmore are shut out 5-0 by Severstal/Locomotiv of Russia.

JANUARY

* After going 5-0-1 en route to the final of the Mac’s AAA Midget world invitational hockey tournament in Calgary, UFA Bisons of Strathmore are shut out 5-0 by Severstal/Locomotiv of Russia. Cochrane’s Chandler Irvin, a defenceman on UFA Bisons now playing with the Drayton Valley Thunder in the Alberta Junior Hockey League, is a key cog in the Bisons machine.

* Ben Willms, Adam Tisdale and Logan Milliken are chosen by their team to represent the Bantam AA Timberwolves at the South Central Alberta Hockey League all-star game. On the Midget AA team, Timberwolves Reed Boothby and defenceman Craig Packard are named the league’s all-star team.

FEBRUARY

* The Cochrane Cowboys wrestling team comes away with medals at the Paperweight Invitational wrestling tournament in Edmonton. Brendan McKeage, Aidan McKeage, Connor McNeice, Daniel Coles and Christoff Coles all earn gold at the Jan. 28 invitational tourney featuring more than 500 wrestlers. Cian Hilkewich takes silver, and Evan Proudlock and Rebecca Netzband win bronze.

* The St. Timothy Thunder senior-varsity girls basketball team wins bronze at their St. Timothy Classic tournament. The Thunder edge Drayton Valley 64-61 in double overtime to take the bronze in the eight-team tournament.

* Cochrane Figure Skating Club member Sydney Perron won silver at the Alberta Winter Games in the ladies juvenile free skate.

MARCH

The Cochrane Cobras varsity girls claim the Rocky View School Association girls basketball crown with a 55-50 victory over the host George McDougall Mustangs. The Cobras varsity boys win the RVSA title with an 83-77 win over Chestermere and claim the South Central Zone Tier 3 title with an 85-70 win over Chestermere before taking silver at provincials.

* The Springbank Community High School Phoenix varsity girls basketball team wins silver at the South Central Zone 3A championships in Olds.

* The Cochrane Generals are swept from the Heritage Junior Hockey League playoffs by the Okotoks Bisons.

* Springbank varsity girls win the Zone basketball title, downing Bow Valley 67-54.

APRIL

* Cochrane Generals head coach Dana Boothby steps down from his post, but stays on with the team as an assistant.

MAY

* Cochrane’s Ryan Portello, 14, is selected to join the 10-man Alberta freestyle moguls team.

* Cochrane High School Cobras win the Zone track meet in Calgary. Springbank Community High School finishes third at Zones, with Alexa Young winning the senior girls’ aggregate award.

JUNE

* Cochrane’s Coda Gordon of the Swift Current Broncos is selected in the sixth round (165th overall) by the Calgary Flames in the National Hockey League entry draft.

* Cochrane businessman Earle Connor qualifies for the Canadian Paralympic team headed to the Games in London, sprinting 100 metres in 12.63-seconds at the Canadian trials in Calgary. He finishes fourth at the Games.

JULY

* Cochrane steer wrestler Tanner Milan makes it to the final day of the Calgary Stampede, only to break the barrier on his first run.

* Cochrane chuckwagon racer Grant Profit retires after four decades of racing on the pony and thoroughbred chuckwagon circuits.

* Cochrane Generals assistant coach Ken Soloski is named to replace Dana Boothby as the team’s head coach.

AUGUST

* Cremona’s Lukas Becker takes gold in the 12-year-old boy’s BMX event at the Alberta Summer Games. Cochrane’s Taylor Otterson takes silver in the boys 15-16 age group.

* Jim Anderson wins his third-straight Cochrane Golf Club senior men’s championship with a 1-over-par 71 score.

SEPTEMBER

* Cochrane’s Calum Neff finishes first in the 20-km Xterra Trail run at Canmore Nordic Centre.

* The Cochrane Rangers men’s team wins the A final of the Cochrane Cup soccer tourney with a 3-1 win over Banff.

OCTOBER

* The Cochrane High School Cobras varsity girls defeat Airdrie’s George McDougall Mustangs 4-1 to win their fourth-consecutive Rocky View Sports Association soccer title Oct. 4.

* The Bow Valley Bobcats capture their second-straight Rocky View Sports Association varsity girls soccer bronze medal, defeating the Chestermere Lakers 4-2 in Airdrie.

* Bearspaw’s Stefan Daniel wins gold at the Alberta Schools Athletic Association provincial cross-country running championships.

* The Springbank Community High School Phoenix win their third-straight Rocky View Sports Association Tier 2 football championship with a 27-0 win over the George McDougall Mustangs of Airdrie.

NOVEMBER

* The Cochrane High School Cobras junior varsity boys volleyball team wins the Rocky View Sports Association banner with a 3-1 win over Springbank Community High School Phoenix.

* Cochrane steer wrestler Tanner Milan becomes Canadian champion, winning the steer-wrestling event at the Canadian Finals Rodeo in Edmonton.

* The Springbank Phoenix junior varsity girls volleyball team wins the South Central Alberta Senior High Zone championship in Strathmore.

* The Cochrane High School Cobras football team wins the provincial Tier 3 high school football championship with a 30-21 win over the St. Albert Skyhawks in St. Albert, capping a season in which the Cobras went 13-1. “Just an unbelievable game,” said Cobras coach Rob McNab following the contest.

DECEMBER

* The St. Timothy Thunder wrestling team takes second at district-wide meet in Calgary. The school takes 28 wrestlers to the event, 14 finish first.
