23 local athletes prove their worth at Provincial Alberta 55 Plus Games

23 local athletes won 21 total medals at the Provincial Alberta 55 Plus Games July 5 to 7 in Medicine Hat.

Twenty three local athletes from Area Seven, made up of Cochrane, Bearspaw, Bragg Creek and Springbank had a successful showing by winning 21 medals at the Provincial Alberta 55 Plus Games held July 5 to 7 in Medicine Hat. 

Area Seven, otherwise known as the Big Country Seniors Sports Society, played against representatives from the seven other zones in 14 different sports ranging from bocce ball to horseshoes to floor curling with participants age 55 to 92 competing.

The team had their most successful showing in track and field competitions where James Roberts finished first in 75 plus javelin as well as third in shotput. Paulette McKinnon had an outstanding showing in her four competitions, finishing first in 70 plus discus, second in the 50 metre dash, second in javelin and third in shotput. Norma Dawson rounded out the group taking home gold in each of the 65 plus 50, 100 and 200 metre dash.

In the bocce ball 55 plus open division, the foursome made up Myrna Fink, Monique MacKenzie, Debra Nielsen and Debra Michel just missed the podium by finishing fourth. In cycling, Clint Docken won gold in 65 plus trials, Ian Woodworth won gold and bronze in 65 plus road race and 60 plus time trials while also taking home another bronze medal in the 60 plus road race.

Karl Gibbie won silver in the 85 plus low gross golf tournament while fellow teammate Frank Hutchins won gold during the 65 plus low gross event. Don MacMillan withdrew from other events due to injury but still managed to take home gold in the 85 plus golf division. In women's golf, Alicia Brooks was the lone Area Seven female to place in the golf tournament earning bronze with a solid performance in the 65 plus event.

In floor curling, Nettie and Dave Neustaeter won gold in the 55 plus event, while the foursome of Glen Davis, Joe Galarneau, Marion Peterson and Marion Doell finished second in the 70 plus division. Roswitha Schmitt-Blouin and Ed Michel finished fourth in the 55 plus floor shuffleboard competition. Dan Stuehrenberg and Doug Campbell finished third in the 70 plus division, taking home a bronze medal for their efforts.

Slo-pitch wrapped up the competition with each team comprised of athletes from their respective zones. Dean Pederson, Glen Skrabek, Greg Martin and Reg MacDonald helped the 55 plus team win a silver medal while the 65 plus team made up of Dan Muhlbach, Darrel Tetz and Pat Drinnan and the 70 plus group including Nick Radmanovich and Ralph Gardeski each finished fourth.
