Four-sport athlete Kyle Moortgat was named Cochrane High School Cobras varsity male athlete of the year at the school’s athletic awards ceremony June 14 at the school. The football team’s most valuable player and basketball all-star, who also played badminton and won bronze in provincial track and field, was one of four Cobras athletes to receive the accolade.

“We had a terrific athletic season,” said Cochrane High athletic director Rob McNab, who was not involved in the voting process as both his daughters were candidates. He co-coached the division-winning varsity girls basketball team and the provincial-championship football team. “Many league championships. Many Zone medals and definitely some provincial banners. Just a fantastic year all around.”

McNab’s eldest daughter, Kristen, was named varsity female athlete of the year. She led the basketball team to a Rocky View Sports Association division title and took bronze in the 4x100-metre relay at the high school provincial track meet. She also played badminton, soccer and ran cross-country. She’s joining the Medicine Hat College Rattlers women’s basketball team in the fall.

Provincial gold-medal wrestler Aidan McKeage was named Cobras junior-varsity male athlete of the year. He was also involved in track and cross-country running. McNab’s youngest daughter, Mikaela, was the junior-varsity female athlete of the year, excelling in cross-country running, basketball, volleyball and track.
