Generals and firefighters set to do battle in charity game

"But more importantly, they're a pillar of our community. They've been here for so long and they've always been quite kind to us when we've had meetings there and stuff like that. The building is aging and they need some help with some upkeeps. One of the bigger items they need some help on is the furniture so we thought this would be a good way to bring some awareness to the needs of the Legion."

The Cochrane Generals and Cochrane Firefighters are preparing to drop the puck on Dec. 6 to raise money for a good cause.

The game, which will take place at 7:30 p.m. at the Cochrane Arena, is a new initiative that came together really quickly according to John Chyka, a fireman who works at the Cochrane Fire Services that will also be suiting up in the contest.

"This year, the Cochrane Firefighters sponsor the Cochrane Generals toward their season, so we sent a little money their way," Chyka said. "When we were doing that, we just starting having conversations about having a charity game, picking a local charity or someone we could donate money too."

"We're two of the bigger pillars in the community and the Generals normally gather a fairly decent crowd to their home games and we (the firefighters) like to get out in the community and help various organizations so that's kind of how this all got started."

While this is the first instalment of the event, Chyka said this was definitely something that the fire department would consider doing if it was received well in the community this go around.

"We'll see how this one goes," Chyka said when asked about the topic. "You never know with an inaugural event like this ... you want to see how it all plays out. We're still trying to work out the kinks and bugs but we really hope that it becomes an annual event and hopefully we get a large crowd out tomorrow night."

The charity that was chosen was the Cochrane Legion, a place looking to improve the lives of Veterans, including those serving in the Canadian Armed Forces and the RCMP as well as their families.

"We picked the Legion for a couple of reasons," Chyka said. "It fits nicely with the Generals name and paramilitary rank and file structure at the fire department."

Tickets for the game is $10 for adults, $5 for seniors and free for students and kids under six. All the money made from ticket sales, 50/50, a puck toss at one of the intermissions in which pucks are $5 each will go toward the Legion.
