Quarterback Levi Jackson threw four touchdown passes and ran for one more as the Springbank Community High School Phoenix defeated the visiting Bow Valley High School Bobcats 57-6 in Rocky View Sports Association Tier 2 football play Oct. 4 at Springbank.

It started well for Bow Valley (0-4), with the Bobcats recovering Springbank’s (3-1) game-opening short kickoff near mid-field. Rookie quarterback Scott Haigh drove the Bobcats to a couple of first downs before turning the ball over on downs.

“We didn’t come out with the kind of intensity we should have,” said Phoenix defensive coordinator Santiago Fuentes. “That’s something we’re definitely going to have to work on.”

Then Jackson then got his hands on the ball, hitting receiver Kevin Natenstadt on a 25-yard pass-and-run play for a touchdown six minutes into the first quarter. Three minutes later, Jackson found Luke Jackson in the endzone on a 35-yard bomb.

“They threw the ball really well,” observed Bobcats defensive coach Mike Dang following the contest. “We simply did not play well defensively today.”

Leading 13-0 after the first quarter, the Phoenix cranked up the heat on the Bobcats’ defence in the second, scoring four touchdowns – Jackson on a one-yard dive, Brody Zemlak on a 45-yard dash and Natenstadt on a pair of one-yard passes from his QB.

“We’re happy we were able to play well on both sides of the ball,” said Phoenix head coach Tony Lucas. “And play well on special teams. That means a lot.”

The Bobcats would get their lone score on a one-yard plunge from Haigh, 40 seconds into the fourth quarter.

“We knew we had a young team coming in,” said Norm Cobble, Bobcats offensive-coordinator, filling in for head coach Scott Allard who was not at the game.

Springbank’s final two scores would come on defence, with Zemlak scooping up a fumble and rumbling 95 yards for the score, and Owen Ferguson intercepting a Haigh pass and running 50 yards for the pick-6.

Cobras 53 Cowboys 0

The Cochrane High School Cobras continued their dominating run in Rocky View Sports Association football play, blanking the Chestermere High School Cowboys 53-0 under the lights Oct. 4 in Tier 3 play.

Quarterback Kelton Beach was dialed in, firing touchdown passes to Kyle Moortgat, Jake Moulton and Nik Noseworthy. Moortgat and Noseworthy also scored rushing touchdowns, along with Scott MacMillan and Justin Mount.

“We eliminated all the turnovers and played extremely well,” said Cobras coach Rob McNab.

The Bobcats host the Cobras Oct. 12, 4:30 p.m. kickoff.
