Leroy Durand, resident of Cochrane, Alberta, passed away at the Foothills Hospital with family by his side, after an intense four week battle with COVID on December 12, 2020 at the age of 81 years.

Leroy was the second child born to Julia and Felix Durand on January 6, 1939 in Elnora, Alberta. He spent almost his entire career teaching at Beaverlodge Regional High School. Of the more than 40 years he lived in Beaverlodge, he spent 27 years on the Beaverlodge Town Council, including nine years as Mayor. Leroy contributed to many other organizations such as Elks, SMEDA and the Riverbend Golf and Country Club.

In 2008 Leroy and Irene moved to Cochrane to be closer to their three daughters and their families. He quickly became very involved with the senior center. No more politics! Leroy stayed active right until the end, curling four times a week, golfing in two leagues and weekly card nights. Leroy spent many happy years travelling the world with his wife of 55 years, Irene.

Leroy’s COVID doctor said she was honoured and humbled to get to know him and has never witnessed a person more content and proud of his family in her whole career. Family was everything to Leroy. Leroy has created an incredible legacy and will live in our hearts and in our stories forever.
