2019 positions Cochrane to support our growing community

Happy New Year Cochrane! Every day it is an honour and a privilege to serve as your mayor and work with so many of you who love this town as much as I do.

Happy New Year Cochrane!

Every day it is an honour and a privilege to serve as your mayor and work with so many of you who love this town as much as I do.

With the start of a new year, many of us are setting goals for what we plan to achieve over the course of the year. Personally, I am excited about all the goals that we at the town have set to accomplish in 2019 and beyond.

From continued work on the Bow River Bridge, to the launch of the new on-demand transit system, to new pathway connections – Sunset Ridge to Cochrane Ranche; Spray Lakes Family Sports Centre to the Jim Uffelmann Memorial Park; George Fox Trail upgrades – we are investing in traffic flow improvements to support our growing community.

We are also investing in community recreational opportunities, as we move forward with the purchase of a quarter section north of Heritage Hills for future sports fields.

In addition, the Tri-Site Concept Plan will see three of our Town-owned properties transformed into community hubs. These include the Fifth Avenue site (former location of Big Hill Leisure Pool and including the Cochrane Lions Rodeo Park), the former Esso Bulk station, and the one-acre site east of the library. The project aims to transform Cochrane’s downtown into a pedestrian-friendly community gathering area, with design elements that incorporates Cochrane’s heritage. Administration will be coming back to council in the spring with an implementation plan.

At the end of January, CAO Dave Devana and I are hosting the Mid-Sized Cities Mayors’ and CAOs’ Caucus at the RancheHouse. Caucus members are mayors and chief administrative officers who represent 22 urban centres and nearly one million Albertans. This group plays an important role in collectively advocating for provincial and federal policies and funding to support the needs of our growing communities.

With the upcoming provincial election, we have invited the provincial party leaders including the Premier to attend this event and share their platforms. I am excited to showcase our community and use this opportunity to put Cochrane on the map. Thanks to the generous support of our event sponsors: Urban Systems, TransCanada Corporation, and Caron & Partners LLP, and to Southland Transportation for providing event ground transport.

Looking forward to all that 2019 has to offer.
