Councillor taking it to the ropes for women's empowerment

Boxing Beauties Week 1 “I can’t understand why you would sign up to take a punch.” It was a bemused comment from a friend when I mentioned I had signed up for the Boxing Beauties charity match hosted by Rival Boxing in support of Big Hill Haven.

Boxing Beauties

Week 1

“I can’t understand why you would sign up to take a punch.”

It was a bemused comment from a friend when I mentioned I had signed up for the Boxing Beauties charity match hosted by Rival Boxing in support of Big Hill Haven.

Three months to get into shape, learn how to box, and step into the ring in front of 700 people. Intimidating. So why do it?

For three reasons.

I am not completely out of shape, but more mom-bod than athlete and it is due time to focus on my health. There is an appeal in the intensive three month commitment, with a need to prove it to myself that I could do this. If I don’t commit to the work that goes into this, we will all know.

Secondly, I have been involved in meetings about how to get more women elected in local government and it has me brainstorming about how to empower women across the spectrum. A common theme is that women often don’t feel knowledgeable enough, or don’t feel capable enough, or are just plain scared. I hope that by ignoring my own fears and stepping out of my comfort zone I can encourage others to do the same.

And thirdly, fundraising for the Big Hill Haven Women’s Shelter is worth the sweat and effort. I am glad to play even a small part in getting a shelter built that will provide support for women and children suffering from abuse.

I started training last Monday and it has been a great start. The training from Rival Boxing is both exhausting and fun and the support from the other members keeps me encouraged. Although I was admittedly looking to Advil for sponsorship by mid-week.

Calling Advil wasn’t necessary as The Corner Coworking has stepped up to sponsor me – and it's great to have them in my corner. Having this sponsor also adds incentive to show up for five-plus training sessions a week.

I am looking forward to the challenge and hope that sharing my story will inspire others to step up.
