Eagle moving to Thursdays soon

The day is July 11. At least for now it’s July 11, but life is about change and there’s certainly the possibility for change in this instance.

July 11 is the date, at least for now, when the mighty Cochrane Eagle will be delivered Thursdays instead of Wednesdays.

Unless you’ve been dead or in Edmonton, you’ll realize we’re making all sorts of changes around here and all are based on our new press in St. Albert, which we will be using for the first time for the July 11 issue.

This press is amazing.

It’s the equivalent of a three-storey building and will print up to 96 pages in one run with colour on every page.

And it will be stapled once again.

There’s only three presses in the world like this and one of them is ours in St. Albert.

To an old dog like me, erecting a new press in these economic times is an incredible vote on confidence in community newspapers.

While others are doom and gloom about the future of newspapers, Great West erects a new press.

And I love the irony of this.

Starting this month we will be printing the Edmonton Journal on our new press.

The irony is, in the old days, community newspapers were forced to suck up to dailies just to get printed, and now the dailies are coming to us. I love it. So we’ll have a few more weeks and then the magic happens with our new press.

What’s in store?

So, will Co-op buy the existing Safeway?

With the sale of Safeway to Sobeys, it might be possible because government powers won’t be comfortable with one owner for both stores.

Interesting possibilities on the food front in Cochrane.
