Dear Editor,

I feel compelled to respond to the comments of Alan Spiller last week regarding Conservative Party of Canada leadership candidate Pierre Poilievre and the rally at Spruce Meadows. In my view, Spiller's comments were elitist and condescending toward other seniors in attendance. I am not a senior, but was there as well along a small group, all of whom were those same seniors (or very near to senior) that Mr. Spiller felt the need to denigrate. The seniors I was with are plenty smart.

What I witnessed was people of all ages and ethnicities hoping for change and seeing that possibility for the first time in a long time.

Mr. Spiller complains about people exercising their democratic right to protest "costing taxpayers millions" but apparently has no problem with the CBC, which long ago shed its mandate of being the public broadcaster to represent all Canadians. The broadcaster's bloated salaries and budgets have cost us billions over the decades.

The tagline says, "Poilievre isn't a true conservative..", and even though Mr. Spiller claims that he is one himself, his divisive comments that mirror Liberal/NDP talking points left me wondering if that's true.
