LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Council needs to deny Jones Estate Land development

Our council passed a bylaw to make masks mandatory should the number of COVID-19 cases increase to ten. This by-law will affect everyone in Cochrane if this is the case! This by-law was passed without a public hearing.

Our council passed a bylaw to make masks mandatory should the number of COVID-19 cases increase to ten.

This by-law will affect everyone in Cochrane if this is the case! This by-law was passed without a public hearing.
What does this have to do with the development of the Jones Estate?

The constant threat of the development has caused great anxiety and stress for the surrounding residents and has affected their well-being. One does not need to explain what this can do to one’s health not even to mention that it could wipe out millions of dollars of repairs.

If this council has the power and authority to make masks mandatory, with the reasoning based on the well-being, health and safety of the public, this council for that same reason should tell this one person developer to wait until the pandemic is over!

Apparently, no they cannot do that! I was told that the developer has the right to apply for re-zoning and development over and over again.

Then I would argue that I have the right to decided to wear a mask or not.

Then other businesses in Cochrane should have the right to be open and exist just like this developer.

All of this makes me wonder if there will be a public hearing on this application.

I agree with A. Lapiere statements “we have given up our rights to spend time with friends and family, our right to work, our children’s right to educate, our right to travel freely ……. These freedoms should not be conceded so easily.”

I grew up in the Netherlands just after the Second World War. I have first-hand stories from my parents about what it was like to be stripped of your freedoms. With the help of brave Canadian soldiers, many of them lost their lives, the Netherlands was liberated. Nov. 11 is just around the corner. Is this Council going to decide to cancel the memorial services this year?

I certainly hope not!
