LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Proposed development threat to natural area

Sincere and complete opposition to Melcor's housing development adjacent to Sunset Ridge
cochrane-opinion

We are writing to you today to express our sincere and complete opposition to the land use application for rezoning and to the housing development proposed for the natural wild reserve, adjacent to Sunset Ridge in Cochrane, currently under review for Melcor Developments.

This amazing parcel of land is highly sensitive environmentally, with numerous ravines, coulees and gullies and has a long history of use and enjoyment by all residents of Cochrane and those of the surrounding areas. This is a natural undisturbed wildlife corridor.

This development will clearly degrade and compromise the site, to the point where it will no longer be able to sustain any of its natural vegetation, diversity, wildlife habitat and beauty.

We would encourage you to take the time to go for a walk and appreciate this incredible place.

This type of construction will have a direct impact on the wildlife habitat in the area!

The noise produced by construction activities can lead to alteration in feeding and breeding patterns which could prove detrimental. As well, the noise and light from ongoing construction can disrupt species' feeding or breeding behaviours, and the disruption of the land can divide large habitats into smaller ones, impacting species that rely on spacious habitat. An active construction site can also attract wildlife to an unsafe area.
