Mayors Column: Education Week— Honoring our Teachers, Students and Families

We honour our teachers, who are critically important adults of influence in the lives of our children. We can all remember a special teacher in our youth who contributed positively to who we are as adults today.

This week is Education Week (April 27 – May 1). There has never been a more important time to say with much love and gratitude - thank you - to our teachers, education partners, parents and family members for their support of our students during this unprecedented time.

Our Educators have experienced a huge disruption to how they deliver programming. The instruction our beloved teachers provide has very quickly had to be changed and developed into online learning to help each of their students progress through their course material.  A monumental task given the tight time frame, in addition to the upheaval of their own lives in the face of COVID.

Our Parents have themselves been wearing more hats – working, parenting, home schooling, possibly also juggling support for elderly parents -- all in one space for many.

Our Students have experienced a complete upheaval in their routine - seeing friends, playing sports and even the comfort that a routine can bring -- have all changed drastically.

To the Graduating Class of 2020, while we may have to postpone celebrating your achievements, your success has not been diminished.  We will find a way to celebrate and send you off into the next exciting chapter of your lives as soon as possible.

Mental health is a big part of our overall wellness, especially during this time. If you are struggling in any way, please reach out for support when needed. Resource links are available at:  cochrane.ca/covid-19  and choose the “Support and Information” link from the sidebar menu.

We honour our teachers, who are critically important adults of influence in the lives of our children. We can all remember a special teacher in our youth who contributed positively to who we are as adults today. Their passion, commitment and care create lasting impacts for our children, and for this, we are eternally grateful. Their jobs extend far beyond textbooks and lesson plans. This week, we recognize and honor those who do so much for our young people.

We will get through this together. Stay strong.

Be kind, stay home and save lives
