One of Cochrane's mysteries has been solved

You may recall a recent column wondering why a couple of events were not listed on the town’s website. It was SummerFest and WinterFest that didn’t make the list and now we know why.

You may recall a recent column wondering why a couple of events were not listed on the town’s website.

It was SummerFest and WinterFest that didn’t make the list and now we know why.

Sandy Johnson, who is the cultural programmer for the town, sent an email explaining the situation.

She said, “Groups are able to load their events onto the town’s website themselves — they just input their info, upload their posters and — voila!

“If groups and individuals work through the festival and event process with the Town of Cochrane, they are advised of this.”

So there you have it.

Ask and ye shall receive, and another mystery is solved.

Bragg Creek is certainly no mystery.

It’s a great little community, and Friday, March 1 will see the Taste of Bragg Creek event at the community centre.

There’s a ton of details on this event on page 12; it’s going to be great fun and great food.

Foodies unite, we’ll see you at Bragg Creek.

As I was looking at the Bragg Creek website the other day, I noticed it had this information.

“Bragg Creek is recognized as a designated place by Statistics Canada.”

Nothing more.

Just a place.

Bragg Creek deserves more than that.

Simply a place?

By a federal government department?

No doubt the decision to name Bragg Creek a place was reached after much deliberation — in both official languages — and much money spent on studies.

Bragg Creek is a great place.

You and I know that, but apparently Statistics Canada won’t raise it to that level so it remains on the world-wide web as simply ‘a place.’

Only in Canada? Pity.

Speaking of only in Canada, I must assure you that the Taste of Bragg Creek will not have a language problem like Quebec.

Pasta will be pasta and not in French.

I find it interesting that the Quebec language police are so stringent interpreting their language laws.

And if they really wanted to be flat out honest they would do something about the name Quebec.

It’s not French, it’s Aboriginal.

Do you know what’s going in to the Quarry shopping centre?

We hear Wal-Mart and a couple of others, but Sobeys is the only one that’s been officially outed so far.

But apparently there will not be any drive-thrus located in the centre.

Which of course, would mean no fast foods, coffee shops or even banks.

Hard to believe I know, but since the town is keeping the whole thing so secret one just never knows.

A local business person recently phoned the developer of the Quarry about locating a business there.

He already owns quite a successful business in town and the spokesperson for the developer asked the local one if he needed a drive-thru.

Yes, replied the local guy, it’s about 50 per cent of my present business.

Sorry, said the developer guy, the town doesn’t want any drive-thrus on the site.

Is that true?

We simply don’t know because the town is tighter with information than a bull’s bum in fly time.

There are many questions, and I would be astounded if the developer guy would give out such information if it wasn’t correct.

Is this decision town-official policy?

Does the policy apply all over town or just the Quarry site?

Did council establish this policy or is it even aware it exists?

Or is this policy the brainchild of a staffer who decided drive-thrus are not green enough for us?

Just another one of the many town intrigues.
