The Cochrane Pipe Band played during the 2013 Calgary Military Tattoo May 4 at Max Bell Arena. The term ‘tattoo’ means the performing of music and displays by a military band.

It’s great to be sitting in the stands and hear the announcer introducing and praising something from Cochrane.

Like last Saturday when the Cochrane Pipe Band was announced at the 2013 Calgary Military Tattoo at Max Bell Arena.

The band used to be called Men of Vision Pipes and Drums, but recently changed its name to much simpler Cochrane Pipe Band.

And for a couple of reasons.

While the Men of Vision statue is well-known in this area, not many people outside the area recognize it.

Also, there’s women in the pipe band, so Cochrane Pipe Band simply makes sense.

And they’re sounding very good, especially the percussion group when they do their special thing.

There’s always talk of promoting the town, and this pipe band is a great ambassador for Cochrane and area.

They play at all sorts of parades in southern Alberta and while the crowd at the tattoo was applauding the band’s efforts I thought, there’s no pipe band or no promotion for High River, Airdrie, Okotoks or any other community neighbouring Calgary.

Just Cochrane.

This band not only sounds good but looks great as every member proudly wears the ancient Cochrane tartan.

If our tourism folks want a vehicle to promote Cochrane then they should talk to the pipe band, they do as well as anybody can.

And one last thing, the band can always use more pipers. Just give me a call and I’ll get you in touch.
