Senate a real expensive joke

It’s not surprising at all that the Canadian Senate has obviously never learned one of the great lessons of Canadian journalism— never give a journalist an expense account. Like Mike Duffy and Pamela Wallin.

It’s not surprising at all that the Canadian Senate has obviously never learned one of the great lessons of Canadian journalism— never give a journalist an expense account.

Like Mike Duffy and Pamela Wallin.

If you’re surprised journalists fudge expense account numbers then you no doubt still believe politicians are elected to serve us.

Journalists call expense accounts creative writing so that tells you a lot.

One of the more creative expense account stories involved that great writer Farley Mowatt.

He was on assignment in the Canadian Arctic for some magazine and it was in his early days which meant his drinking days.

He submitted an expense account where he cleverly hid the exorbitant prices he paid for whiskey and listed the costs as expenses because one of his sled dogs had the temerity to die.

Nothing was said for a couple of weeks and then he got a message that his numbers didn’t add up and that he overcharged something like $15.

He immediately replied that it was not an addition mistake, he simply forgot to list the flowers he bought for the grieving bitch.

There’s no record if he had to pay.

Obviously he had the qualifications to be a fine Canadian senator.

But if nothing else the latest Senate taffy pull will cause many Canadians to question the need for the senate.

It certainly gives new meaning to the idea of a Triple E senate and I have a few ideas for the E’s that might be appropriate.

Like how about Triple E as in edentate, egocentric and erratic.

The simple truth is our political system is a joke.

Watch Question Period and then convince someone those are leadership qualities you saw.

Listen to politicians the world over cover their butts on all sorts of things rather than tell the truth.

I would rather my sons be bank robbers than politicians because they’d get more community respect.

Is it any wonder so few people bother to vote when we have shenanigans like we see almost every day in Ottawa?

Edentate you ask? It means having no teeth. We might have added another E as in execrable which means detestable.

Town not ‘Co-op’erating

Speaking of politics.

Why have we not heard anything about the land Calgary Co-op wants to buy for a new shopping centre across from Cochrane Toyota.

The owner wants to sell, Co-op wants to buy.

It would mean 300 jobs in our community and it would mean the good folks in the Fireside and Riversong developments wouldn’t have to drive all the way into town for a quart of milk.

Does the town have other plans for that 13 acres?

If so why not share that with us?

Does the town have something against Co-op? If so share that with us.

This is town land which means it is owned by the taxpayers not town bureaucrats or politicians.

Is there another proposal for the land? If so why wouldn’t taxpayers be told?

There is no logical reason why such a proposal should take years to be approved.

Wouldn’t it be refreshing to have an attitude in this town of can do rather than can’t do?
