From May 11 onward, our website will once again be called CochraneEagle.ca, and so will our social media channels. 

Remarkably, a few news reports have indicated that some people in the impacted areas have chosen not to listen to mandatory evacuation orders. This is not only a foolish decision, but it also may put firefighters at risk in the event they need to rescue these people later. We hope people who are wilfully ignoring evacuation orders can think not only of themselves in these instances. 

The number 83 was haunting me the other day. One of the reasons was obvious – more about that in a minute. But there was another, totally unexpected reason that punctuated the matter.

Dear editor, Alberta as a democratic capitalist province has multiple tax-free and avoidance financial schemes that benefit the wealthy, married, families, parliamentarians (since they create the formulas) and corporations.  Lower income persons are always the financial losers.

Elections are high stakes, but also grand political theatre. Hopefully, a better future will emerge for Alberta from the rubble, dust, and ashes when the election is finally complete.

Over the last 12 years, I’ve been fortunate to share my stories with readers of the Cochrane Eagle. I look forward to continuing to share my own stories from the not-so-little town on the Bow in the Foothills of Canadian Rockies.

Optimism characterized so much of the artwork on display at the Foothills Art Club's recent showcase. In acrylic, oil, ink, water, scratch board, collage, and mixed media, these creative Cochranites gave expression to their inner longings for the beauty of better days in breathtaking landscapes, wildlife, florals, still lifes, abstracts, and more.

Dear editor, It's sad that the Cochrane Eagle feels obliged to defend the CBC. However, as the expression goes, “birds of a feather flock together.”

Dear editor, One of our 55+ apartments in Cochrane, Lofts on the Bow, recently received five Automated External Defibrillator Devices (AEDs). These life-saving machines are used for sudden cardiac events.

“Laughter is sunshine,” Victor Hugo wrote in Les Misérables; “it chases winter from the human face.” Well, it certainly seems last week’s column on humour helped chase away winter from the faces of many of our readers, if the responses I received are any indication.
