Judi Hunter will be the voice of Rocky View Schools in Bearspaw, Bragg Creek, Springbank and rural Cochrane after being elected Ward 5 trustee.
Judi Hunter was one of the three candidates to vie for the role. The grandmother of eight previously worked for years in the Calgary Board of Education’s technology department and ran on a platform of passion for E-learning and a belief in a strong public education system.
Springbank resident and father of four daughters Dan Cavanagh, who placed second in the race with 761 votes, tried to leverage his long history in the school system - as a teacher, assistant principal and vice-principal - during his election campaign. Issues at the forefront of his platform included accountability at the division and school management levels, a balanced budget, realistic class sizes and a “children first ” attitude.
Bragg Creek resident and former community association president Kristyn Schmidt, a mom of three with a political science degree, campaigned for fair funding for smaller schools. She placed third with 606 votes.
The Ward 5 job opened up earlier this fall when longtime RVS board chair Colleen Munro, who represented the area for three terms, vacated her seat in order to run for county election.
Munro lost in Division 9
to Crystal Kissel in the rural region north of Cochrane, including Cochrane Lake and Monterra.
