Cochrane in Brief

Bike Cochrane AGM

Bike Cochrane, the local not-for-profit society responsible for the recent opening of the new flow park in downtown Cochrane, is holding its AGM on Oct. 6, at 7 p.m. via Zoom. The AGM is open to anyone who currently has a Bike Cochrane membership. There are thee positions up for election within the organization that will be determined at the AGM— President, treasurer and director of operations. Any member who wishes to run is able to, and is being asked to prepare a five-minute speech on why they would like to be nominated and what they can bring to the board.

Blue Cart Audit

The Town of Cochrane has been conducting a blue cart audit which began this summer. The audit will assess the contamination levels of recycled materials and items that should be in waste or organics carts, with the aim of educating residents on what is considered contamination. Under the Town’s current collection contract, penalties for contaminated items will rise from $100 to $300 beginning in January 2021— A potential $100,000 per year expense for the Town. The Town engaged a third-party to conduct the audit, which included the inspection of 10,000 residential blue cars in Cochrane. The results will highlight common issues and help residents ensure their waste is fit for recycling.

Town Awards Postponed

The Cochrane Community Awards have been postponed until 2021 as a result of the complications brought on by COVID-19. The organizing committee’s preference is to celebrate the great people of Cochrane in person, which is impossible at this time. The Order of Cochrane, presented by Cochrane’s Mayor and Council, will run with a call for nominations to be made in September. If you made a nomination in spring, the organizing committee is asking that you resubmit your nominations once a new date has been determined for 2021.
