Alliance Church Grand Re-Opening

After months of construction and more than $4 million in renovations, Cochrane Alliance Church is ready to opens its doors to the community.

A grand re-opening celebration of the Glenbow Drive worship house will take place on Sept. 3 from 9 to 11 a.m., with a free pancake breakfast, a bouncy castle and live entertainment by Cochrane musical trio Cloud Chaser. Members of the congregation will also offer guided tours of the new space.

Previously, pastor Kevin Halkyard said the church hopes to be “the envy of the RancheHouse, ” with rental spaces for birthday parties, non-profit organizations, children's programming, concerts and more.

The church held its first service in 1979.

Show Your Ride on Sunday

This Sunday marks the fourth annual Show Your Ride for Brandon event to celebrate the life of the late Cochrane teenager, Brandon Thomas.

Thomas was 17 when he was killed on Dec. 6, 2012, after being hit head-on by a drunk driver.

This year's charity show takes place at Lot 10 on the University of Calgary campus. Registration begins at 7 a.m. and judging begins at 11 a.m. A pin-up contest starts at 11 a.m. and a kids parade begins at 12 p.m. The festivities continue until 5 p.m., with hundreds of people expected to attend.

At 3:30 p.m., vehicles will rev their engines for 21 seconds - as loudly as possible - followed by a moment of silence and balloon release in Brandon's honour.

This year's proceeds will go toward mechanics scholarships at the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology and Cochrane High School, Mothers Against Drunk Driving and the Show Your Ride for Brandon Victims Fund, which will provide support for families who have suffered loss as a result of drinking and driving.
