Bobcats get game

If someone was asked to pick a month where they would expect high school football players to be out on the field, June probably wouldn’t be one of the first answers.

If someone was asked to pick a month where they would expect high school football players to be out on the field, June probably wouldn’t be one of the first answers.

However, the Bow Valley Bobcats football team is getting prepared for its 2014 Rocky View Sports Association (RVSA) season, as it held a scrimmage with the Bert Church Chargers in Airdrie on June 9.

“It’s huge for us to have something like this, especially for us as coaches we can have a better idea where our students will fit into certain spots on the team,” Bobcats offensive coordinator Norm Cobble said. “Plus, it’s a real nice reward for our guys at the end of our spring camp, as it gives them something to work towards as a goal.”

The scrimmage against the Chargers was the final event of a spring camp that started on June 3 for the Bobcats, as it looks to build upon a 1-3-1 record in the RVSA in 2013.

“We basically go over everything with the guys from top to bottom,” Cobble said. “If there’s a new face coming into football, we go over the game with them, and we just refresh the memories of the guys who are coming back.”

Unlike cross-town rival Cochrane Cobras, which are annually one of the top high school football teams in Alberta, the Bobcats don’t have the numbers to draw from when making up the team.

“We usually have around 35 players, and this year we had 32 players at our camp,” Cobble said. “Those are right around our usual numbers though, so it’s not a surprise to us, and we know that pretty much everyone that came out this past week will be a part of the team in September.”

The 2014 RVSA football regular season schedule will not be released until later this summer.
