A new team in the Cochrane Rangers Soccer Club has made a stellar debut in its division.

The women’s over 35 Classics 2 are currently sitting at 5 – 1 in the standings with its latest win over Chestermere United July 6.

“The team they are playing today is really good. They’ve got strong fit players,” said coach Dominic Hickey during the game on Sunday. “If we get a result today, that’s good.”

Hickey has been the technical director of the Cochrane Rangers Soccer Club since 2013.

He said that their only loss of the season was to a really strong team and the Rangers had a few players injured. Other than the one loss, Hickey said, “These guys have been doing really well.”

“I told them that if you finish above half way over the table you should be really pleased,” said Hickey, as he watched them play Chestermere on Sunday. “At the moment they are doing that.”

The Rangers offer both competitive and recreational outdoor leagues during the season. Hickey said the biggest challenge with the competitive league is for the players to find time to make games and practices. The recreational league is at a set time on a set night – the competitive league is not.

He said a lot of the games are in Calgary during the evening, making it difficult for players with other commitments, such as work or kids, to make it all of the time.

Hickey said it is important for players to get into a rhythm when practising so they can be successful on game day and this can be a challenge for some teams when not everyone is able to make it.

But Hickey mentioned that it is still possible for people to sign up if they are interested in participating. Registration runs until July 31 and the season doesn’t end until mid September.

The next game for the Classics 2 team is July 15 against the Wannabes from Calgary at Cochrane Rangers Field at 8:15 p.m.
