Cochrane residents can now look forward to seeing their town in a new way thanks to the introduction of an exciting two-day event called Doors Open Cochrane.

On Sept. 26 and 27, Doors Open Cochrane will give the community a rare glimpse behind the scenes at local businesses, town offices and facilities, recreation centres and the RCMP detachment. There will be something for all ages, including guided tours, exciting demonstrations and fun hands-on activities.

Town council will be participating by opening the doors to council chambers and the mayor’s office.

Satisfy your curiosity by checking out what the mayor’s office looks like, where the councillors’ office is (hint: behind council chambers) and what it feels like to sit at a councillor’s chair behind the large desk in chambers.

The inspiration for the event stems from the first Doors Open events in France two decades ago.

The idea soon spread to neighbouring countries and has since expanded around the globe. Toronto was the first North American city to follow; Calgary has been holding Doors Open events for the past two years.

Doors Open Cochrane occurs during the same weekend as Alberta Culture Days, Sept. 26-28. It’s three days of family fun in Cochrane, so you can get out, learn more about your community and connect with your neighbours.

In the next month, be sure to check out the complete list of participating Doors Open venues on the town website, cochrane.ca/DoorsOpen, and newspaper ads in local papers.

Coffee with the Mayor – resumes in October on the last Thursday of the month.

(This one is for the entire community, not to be confused with a gathering of the same name organized by Seniors on the Bow for its members.) Watch for details in this column during the first week of September.
