VEGREVILLE, Alta. — RCMP in central Alberta say two people have sustained life-threatening injuries after a stabbing and a subsequent police shooting.

Mounties in Vegreville, about 100 kilometres east of Edmonton, responded to a report of an assault with a weapon on Thursday night and found someone had been stabbed.

They say the suspect in that assault then broke into another home, where there was a confrontation with officers, who fired their weapons.

RCMP say officers immediately started life-saving measures on both people while waiting for paramedics to arrive.

The person who officers shot was transported by STARS air ambulance with life-threatening injuries and EMS took the stabbing victim to hospital, where she was listed in critical condition.

The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team is investigating.
