An Alberta man currently in St. Albert provincial court for drug trafficking and weapons charges has been charged with second-degree murder.
Edmonton police (EPS) discovered the body of 18-year-old Charlize Wolfinger-Oflaherty on Jan. 8 while responding to a weapons complaint at walk-up residence near 105 Avenue and 156 Street in Edmonton, according to an EPS press release.
Wolfinger-Oflaherty died of a gunshot wound, an autopsy by the Edmonton medical examiner confirmed.
Ryan Kovacs, 27, is charged with second-degree murder.
A lengthy investigation led to Kovacs’s arrest, the release says.
“While the manner of death wasn’t initially clear, our investigation was able to successfully clarify who was actually responsible for Charlize’s death,” said EPS Homicide Section Staff Sgt. Colin Leathem. "We deeply appreciate the support and patience of the Wolfinger-Oflaherty family throughout the process, and hope the investigative outcome brings them some level of comfort knowing what happened to their loved one.”
RCMP arrested Kovacs on Oct. 19 for allegedly trafficking cocaine, MDMA and Oxycodone. They believe that many of his drug offences took place in St. Albert.
He was scheduled to appear in St. Albert court on Monday, but his appearance was postponed until Dec. 18.
