Standoff near Champion ends with arrest, two still at large

Robert Russell Dwyer, 37 (left), and Aaron John Thompson, 40, of Pincher Creek are still at large with arrest warrants following a Sept. 16 home invasion and assault in Coleman.

Vulkan RCMP have made an arrest following a police operation near Champion Sunday afternoon.

Residents in the surrounding area were asked to shelter in place just after 1 p.m. on Sept. 24, states a press release sent out at the time.

That advisory was lifted at 2:48 p.m. as Mounties indicated they had arrested Tyler Trodden, 39, without incident on multiple charges in relation to incidents in Coleman last week, while two suspects still remain at large.

On Sept. 16 at 5:15 p.m., a press release from Crowsnest Pass RCMP states they were called to a reported home invasion in Coleman.

It's alleged five men armed with weapons entered the home, assaulting a male and female resident, as well as a second male resident who arrived shortly after.

Police allege the suspects possessed firearms and other weapons, and the incident spread to the street once police were called.

Following interviews and evidence gathering, the Mounties believe the home invasion was a targeted attack.

The investigation is ongoing, but police identified four of the five suspects as Garett Adam Ouellette, age 41, Tyler Thomas Trodden, 39, Robert Russell Dwyer, 37, Aaron John Thompson, 40, all of Pincher Creek.

All four suspects have been charged with aggravated assault, break and enter, robbery, as well as multiple firearms and weapons offences.

Ouellette was arrested on Sept. 21 and remains in custody, scheduled to appear in Pincher Creek Provincial Court on Sept. 28.

A judicial Interim Release hearing will be held to determine if bail will be granted for Trodden as well as to set a court date for first appearance.

Dwyer and Thompson remain at large and warrants have been issued for their arrests.
