Sporting events around Cochrane plan to continue in the midst of Covid-19 outbreak

UPDATE: The Cochrane Generals will have a maximum capacity of 190 people for Game 4 tonight at the Cochrane Arena. Alberta Health recommends that if you have travelled outside the country lately, are sick, or elderly to please stay home. Puck drop takes place at 8 p.m.

The Cochrane Generals, Cochrane Chaos and other sporting events taking place around Cochrane will continue on for the time being in the midst of professional sports league temporarily stopping play due to coronavirus (Covid-19).

Game 4 of the Cochrane Generals third-round series Heritage Junior Hockey League (HJHL) against the Okotoks Bisons is supposed to take place tonight. General manager Rick Richards came out with a statement via Twitter on behalf of the team.

"Corona Virus Update: 1. This series will be played 2. Fans will have no contact with the players 3. If you have been out of Canada, know someone who has, or feel sick, please stay home. 4. Any ruling by AHS will be followed. Thanks for your consideration."

Puck drop will go at its scheduled time of 8 p.m.

The Cochrane Chaos are also going to continue playing in their postseason until further notice. They are set to take on the Calgary Titans in Game 2 of their Alberta Junior Female Hockey League (AJFHL) series tomorrow night in Cochrane.

Chaos head coach Derek Loomer said the team would take all precautions to ensure that everybody involved can partake in the events as safely as possible, but also said he isn't overly concerned at this point in time.

"Personally, I am mostly trying to live normally and monitor updates. Maybe wash my hands a little more diligently," he said. "How people are reacting seems more dangerous than the virus at this time."

"If someone should become ill, we will deal with it as necessary. I hope the players are keeping calm but I can't speak for each of them as to their level of concern."

Spray Lake Sawmills Family Sports Centre, the hub of many sporting events in Cochrane, came out with this statement today.

"We continue to monitor developments regarding the outbreak of coronavirus (COVID-19). During these times of uncertainty, it is understandable that many of us feel an increased level of concern around protecting our health and the health of our families and communities," said chief executive officer Blair Felesky. "Recognizing this, and as a valued member of our community, I wanted to share some of the preventative steps Spray Lake Sawmills Family Sports Centre (SLSFSC) is taking to ensure our facilities continue to meet and exceed the strict cleanliness standards that our Members and patrons expect."
