Cochrane singer Lexi Strate was nominated three times at last weekend’s inaugural YYC Music Awards in Calgary – and while she didn’t manage to pull in a win this year, she gained great exposure, met a host of new fans and was thrilled to be part of the experience.

“It was beyond what I expected,” said the 23-year-old rising star. “It was pretty cool to see a bunch of familiar faces and have all of us local musicians come together to celebrate a year of music. I feel lucky to be a part of such a wonderful music community.”

The YYC Awards brought together musicians from all genres to show off the depth of talent this region has to offer. As the Sunday night ceremony wrapped up, Strate put on a high-profile performance in the lobby of the National Music Centre.

“That was an awesome opportunity for me to share my music with some new ears,” she said. “I made some great new connections as a result.”

Strate’s first album, Waves, has made a splash in the Canadian recording industry since being released in March, and her hot single Diamond Eyes puts her fresh vocals and provocative pop sound on display.

The musician has another chance to win top spot at the 2016 Western Canadian Music Awards in Regina on Oct. 13, where she is nominated for Pop Artist of the Year.

Looking to catch her live? Strate will take the stage on Oct. 6 at Broken City in Calgary for the BreakOut West Festival Kick Off Party. Tickets are $6 in advance or $10 at the door.
