The Cochrane Young Singers will be holding their annual Christmas concert Dec. 15 at St. Andrew’s United Church in Cochrane, 128 First St. E. The show starts at 7 p.m.

According to their website, the Young Singers is “a group of boys and girls ages 7-17 from Cochrane and surrounding areas, who love to sing and build friendship through music.”

The group’s director, Melanie Baux, said the group was formed “around 6 or 7 years ago” because “there was a demand for a (children’s) choir in the community.”

Baux, who is a classically trained singer, took on the director position last year.

“I like to encourage the kids to come sing and have fun (while they also) learn about technique and develop (an) interest in music.”

According to her, the group currently has 30 members which are divided into a junior and senior choir.

“We do two concerts, one at Christmas and one in the spring,” said Baux.

This year the Young Singers won a gold medal at the Cochrane Rotary Youth Talent Festival that took place from May 5-7 and were invited back to participate in the festival’s finale which took place on Mother’s Day.

They also performed a concert recently for the Bethany Care Centre residents at the centre on Dec. 7.

Their upcoming performance at St. Andrew’s will feature performances from both choirs, both of which will be accompanied by local violinist Soren Lorentzen.

Baux says there will “be a little bit of everything” at this concert, but they tried to only include “upbeat songs.”

There is no set admission price but donations will be accepted at the event which will go towards increasing the group’s music library and purchasing risers for the choirs.
