Square dancing will be the focus of an upcoming dance party fundraiser for the Cochrane Food Bank.

No experience is necessary to attend the fun Jan. 14 event at Frank Wills Memorial Hall, where dance caller Leslie Gotfrit will teach participants how to bow to your partner, circle left, weave the ring and do-si-do as band Kitchen Party plays live mountain music.

Although the dance is “old time,” organizer Colleen Lee said the function is designed to entertain all ages.

“This one is a high spirited, high energy dance for the younger crowd. Everyone’s kind of learning as they go together,” said Lee, adding square dance parties have sold out in Invermere, Canmore and other towns in Alberta and B.C. “It is very well-received – people have a great time.”

The partners’ party starts at 7 p.m., with a cash bar stocked by Cochrane’s own Half Hitch Brewing Company. Square dancers are encouraged to bring a non-perishable food item for the charity as well.

Tickets are $15 each and can be purchased at hiptobesquarecochrane.brownpapertickets.com/.
