The Cochrane Public Library’s children’s drama program took to the stage today teaching youth aged eight to 12 the magic of theatre.

Facilitated by Andrea Johnston, community outreach and program librarian, the Drama Club will look to teach participants the ins and outs of performing on stage and telling a story.

Johnston, who has a wealth of experience relevant to the program, will be leading the fledgling actors.

“I’ve taken drama all through school and I have experience doing a couple of plays,” she said giving a taste of her skills.

She also has other sporting, practical and theatrical experience that will lend well to her teaching style.

Johnston once participated in a live professional wrestling match - which she described as all staged - and she must engage in public speaking for her job regularly. She was also a synchronized swimmer.

Though swimming is a professional sport, Johnston said it is also a form of storytelling and illustrates how that art can be imparted via different mediums.

“Man is it hard,” she added.

Through until March 7, the club will learn everything from stage presence – where and how to stand – voice modulation, playing a role and telling a story culminating in a live performance in front of parents and friends.

“Costumes can only take you so far,” Johnston said.

Other than the acting skills, the program is also a lot of fun and Johnston expects more of the same this year.

There might still be a few spaces left to register. To register, find out more or to learn about the numerous other programs at the library, go to www.cochranepubliclibrary.ca.
