Two accomplished Cochranites who have put their passions to paper are celebrating their publications this month.

David Irvine, a renowned speaker and leadership adviser for companies like Westjet, Rogers, the RCMP and more, will launch his new book Caring is Everything on Nov. 12 at the Legacy Coffee Company.

“Caring goes on all the time in our world, and we just don’t recognize it and appreciate it,” Irvine said this week. “We’re certainly passing on information … but are we really connecting with each other?”

Irvine has sold more than 300,000 copies of his five previous books, which cover topics such as trust, simple living and workplace accountability. He said he was inspired to write his newest tome about the importance of caring after his brother, a noted family physician, was diagnosed with terminal brain cancer three years ago.

“What made him a good doctor?” he said. “It’s because he cared … it’s the undervalued sense of human goodness.”

Cochrane author Andy Marshall was also inspired by a person in his life, and decided to write about him directly. This fall, Marshall – a retired Calgary Herald reporter – released his unauthorized biography Thin Power about colourful and controversial Calgary Mayor Rod Sykes, whom he worked for in the 1970s.

“He’s a most unusual character,” Marshall said about his subject. “He could take on a room full of people and he could alienate them or he could charm them over – he could do both.”

Both books are available at Tea… And Other Things. Irvine’s book launch at Legacy Coffee Co. begins at 2 p.m. and will include a short presentation and discussion, while Marshall will host a wine and cheese to talk about his book at the Nan Boothby Memorial Library on Nov. 18.
