Historic Downtown will be filled with holiday cheer this weekend when Light Up Cochrane officially kicks off Christmas in town.

Ice sculptures, hay rides, fireworks and more will line the streets to make merry the spirit of the season on Nov. 19 from 4:30-7:30 p.m.

On the heels of the yuletide celebration, the Choral Waves Choir will perform a medley of carols on Dec. 4 at 3 p.m. at the Water Valley Community Hall. Tickets are $10 at Water Valley General Store and children under 12 are free.

The 2016 Canadian Pacific Holiday Train will stop in Cochrane on Dec. 12, bringing bright lights and two popular Canadian musical acts.

Alternative rock group The Odds and country star Dallas Smith headline the unique concert series, which conducts as many as 150 shows in towns and cities across the country with the goal of raising money, awareness and healthy donations for local food banks - including the one in Cochrane.

The train is expected to stop between River Avenue and 4th Street at 2:45 p.m. Bands will perform between 3 and 3:30 p.m before the train keeps moving along the track to Morley, for another performance at 4:25 p.m.

Dec. 12 also kicks off Cochrane's Santa Claus community visits, where Jolly St. Nick and his crew of elves travel to different areas of town over four days to give a nod and a smile to neighbourhood kids.

A full list of Santa's stops can be found at www.cochranesantaclaus.ca/community-visit-schedule.

Finally, on Dec. 15 and 16 at 10:30 a.m. at the Cochrane RancheHouse Theatre, The Nutcracker (in a Nutshell) tells the classic Christmas tale in just 30 minutes. The ballet performance is $12 and is designed for kids ages six and under.
