Next weekend’s Pumpkin Festival at Blue Grass Nursery is promising to be a smash.

The 13th annual autumn celebration takes place Oct. 8 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the nursery on Writing Creek Crescent, just south of the CrossIron Mills Mall in Rocky View County.

For a suggested donation to the Alberta Children’s Hospital Foundation of $5 per person, visitors can manoeuvre through a giant straw maze, spend time with animals at a petting zoo, bowl with pumpkins, bounce on trampolines and more. Food trucks will also be on hand.

The event culminates in a wild grand finale, where a 500-pound pumpkin will plummet from a crane and smash an old car.

Marketing manager Lisa Silva said activities are spread out over15 acres of their property. Last year, more than 5,500 people enjoyed the day.

“For us, it’s a way to give back to the community,” Silva said. “(It’s) a fun family event.”
