Redwood Meadows FB betting on fun night of gaming

The Redwood Meadows Firefighters’ Association (RMFA) is rolling the dice on an entertaining new event that blends raising funds with raising stakes.

“We’ve been doing our gala style event since 2004,” said RMFA president Gary Robertson. “It was time to change things up.”

Fire & Dice is the theme of the group’s gaming night on Oct. 22 at the Bragg Creek Community Centre. Traditionally, the RMFA raises thousands of dollars for its volunteer fire department by hosting an annual distinguished sit-down dinner. But this year, to accommodate a difficult economy, organizers scaled things back to offer an evening that’s enjoyable – while still being accessible.

“The economy has changed and people are in different positions in terms of how much they’re able to give to charities. We understand that people don’t have that capability,” Robertson said. “It’s more of a way for people to still get out, come with their friends and focus more on the fun, and we’ll hopefully raise a bit of funds while we’re at it.”

A $45 ticket will earn patrons $50,000 in phony cash, as well as two drink tickets and a raffle entry. Those looking for a more exclusive evening can purchase a VIP ticket for $75 – which comes with a whopping $250,000 in funny money and access to a more comfortable lounge behind a club-style velvet rope.

Guests can use their bogus bucks at blackjack, roulette, poker and craps tables.

“Some people, at the end of the night, have $10 or $20 million (fake) dollars,” said Robertson with a laugh. “You feel like you’re a high roller.”

All money raised will be used to outfit the department’s Event and Response Logistics (EARL) trailer. The 18-foot compartment carries folding cots, inflatable structures and other crucial equipment to take care of emergency responders for up to 72 hours during large-scale incidents.
