Smoking Aces on the road again

Playing close to 50 gigs a year, you’d think blues band Smoking Aces would have been to every venue in Cochrane and the surrounding areas. Not so, but that’s all about to change. The band will take to the Water Valley Church stage on Nov.

Playing close to 50 gigs a year, you’d think blues band Smoking Aces would have been to every venue in Cochrane and the surrounding areas.

Not so, but that’s all about to change.

The band will take to the Water Valley Church stage on Nov. 12 in what will hopefully be the first of many upcoming performances.

“We always look forward to any kind of venue like that,” said Smoking Aces member John White. “Hopefully the atmosphere is going to be like it is here in Cochrane at the Heritage House Coffee Shop.

“Water Valley’s a bit similar in that it holds at maximum of around 50 to 75 people, which means you can really communicate with the audience.”

Smoking Aces now writes around 40 per cent of the material the band performs. For White, bringing the band’s own voice to the forefront of performances is tantamount to a good performance.

“Writing that much of our own material means we can tell people the story behind the song,” he said. “When I go to see someone live, that’s a big part of the show for me.”

Playing Water Valley for the first time is a step into the unknown for the band as it looks to expand its playing zone in the upcoming months.

“We want to spread out a bit more,” White said. “We’re occasionally getting up into Edmonton now and out to Bragg Creek, so we want to keep expanding our horizons and move further and further out.”

The Water Valley show is set to start at 8 p.m. More information will be forthcoming as it becomes available.
