All pioneer families need to be recognized

Dear editor:

Re: SummerFest’s July 25 recognition of Cochrane’s pioneer settlers.

The recent recognition of pioneer settlers of the Cochrane area was an excellent idea, but of the 14 families recognized, two were not in the Cochrane area. And what about the many other families whose forefathers settled within the Cochrane trading area prior to 1905? Why were they not even mentioned?

Unfortunately, the honoured families were not given their due recognition because of the obvious lack of research and glaring misinformation in many of the family histories that were publicized. This has led to hurt and anger and certainly does nothing to help newcomers to Cochrane learn about our treasured heritage.

Research of family history needs to be careful and thorough, and we are fortunate in having excellent local history books available to facilitate such information.
