Dear editor:
Our Town of Cochrane communications advisor Laurie Drukier said the town advertised for four weeks prior to the vote of the new proof of residency requirement.
I had no problem voting, as I am a homeowner with a tax assessment notice to prove my address. This, however, was my youngest daughter’s first vote, as she turned 18 in May of this year. None of her identification shows a physical address, nor does my 21-year-old daughter’s. Young voters generally do not own homes. I would have hoped town staff would have given more consideration to young community members voting whose mailing address is a PO Box.
I do wish to thank the deputy returning officer at the Bow Valley Baptist Church who made a call to the province on our behalf. Thankfully both my daughters were able to cast their votes last week.
