Reader may not see eye-to-eye with Cochrane Eagle editorial on alcohol laws

Dear editor:

This is a letter in response to the nearly full-page editorial, which espouses many things, including the allowance of minors into a pub or drinking establishment.

It certainly is a very scary occurrence to see a full page of such unintelligent views.

The reason minors are not currently allowed in drinking establishments is because, upon entering such establishments, adults are under a certain consent that they are entering a premises where certain potentialities which may be harmful to them, may occur.

The very fact you suggest minors should be able to accompany their drinking parents is startling. Minors are deemed to not have the capacity to fully appreciate the decision of entering such an establishment, and the potentialities that may occur from such a decision.

The reason minors are not allowed is because very intelligent people have determined that such laws allow the assurance of certain safety standards for any environment minors are to enter, for the very reason that they are young and do not have the full capacity to make fully informed decisions themselves, which may result in very real negative consequences.

I am shocked to see such an article where an editor is allowed to write a viewpoint where the safety of minors is not fully realized to be the responsibility for adults who are in the same setting of minors.

No wonder you would like to see minors accompany their “drinking parents”. I am sure you have some other great insights into parenting.
