Ag Society celebrates 40th with Fall Fair

Last year, the midway made a surprise stop at the Cochrane and District Agricultural Society. Inspired by the success of the spontaneous 2012 event, the Ag Society decided to step it up a notch in 2013.

This year, the midway will be back. And with it will be three days of trade show exhibitions, equestrian sport events, mini chuckwagon races, lawnmower races and a live entertainment stage.

The first Cochrane Fall Fair is set to run from Sept. 20-22.

“The Ag Society is really wanting to play a bigger role in the community,” said Molly Sapergia, operations manager of the society. “We wanted to put on an event that was for Cochrane.”

Keeping with the horse-sport theme, Extreme Cowboy Alberta will be running an event Sept. 21, and a roping jackpot is slated for that evening.

The fair will also serve as an anniversary party for the Cochrane Ag Society, which celebrates 40 years in action this year. Everyone is invited to join the festivities — and the free cake, ice cream and live entertainment — Sept. 21 at 5 p.m.

On Saturday, the fair will host the Last Chance Giant Community Garage Sale and Flea Market. The sale will run Sept. 21 only, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Local musicians and entertainers are invited bring their guitars along and take the stage for the open mic portion of the fair. After 8 p.m. on Friday and Saturday night, a country band will grace the stage in the beer gardens, playing until midnight.

The Cochrane Fall Fair will run Sept. 20 from 4 p.m. to midnight, Sept. 21 from 9 a.m. to midnight, and Sept. 22 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission onto the grounds is free. Parking will be free on Sept. 20, but will cost $5 for the remainder of the weekend event.
