Kalyna Mackenzie gets ready to throw her bowling ball down the lane during the first Big Brothers Big Sisters Bowl For Kids Sake charity event at Cochrane Lanes. This year’s event will take place March 29 and aims to raise close to $10,000.

Warm up those fingers and polish those bowling shoes because the second annual Bowl For Kids Sake in Cochrane is coming up at the end of March, put on by Big Brothers Big Sisters (BBBS) of Calgary and Area.

“The event is lots of fun. We hope that people come out and support this very worthy cause,” said Sandra MacKenzie, program coordinator for Cochrane.

On March 29, BBBS are inviting teams between four to six players to participate in an hour-and-a-half of ‘bowling fun’ at Cochrane Lanes. The event will take place with two bowling time slots to choose from – 3-5 p.m. or 5:15-7:15 p.m.

MacKenzie said that each team is asked to raise a minimum of $400 per team through collecting pledges made online or in person. Tax receipts are available.

She said last year their goal was to raise $5,000 and they ended up having the event sell out with a final tally of around $9,000 raised. This year the goal is to raise close to $10,000.

“All of the proceeds stay in Cochrane and goes to running all of the programs and helps support mentoring in town,” said MacKenzie.

According to the BBBS website, children and youth who spend time with a mentor in the program ‘gain confidence, acquire new skills and develop better peer relationships’, while the mentors experience ‘a sense of discovery and enjoyment as they see the world of possibility open up through a young person’s eyes.’

Mackenzie pointed out that there is still a need for more mentors in Cochrane.

The event will have food, drinks and bowling shoes included with registration and there will also be door prizes donated by community sponsors.
