As families pack up and prepare to venture out for the August long weekend, Alberta RCMP is reminding motorists to take caution on Alberta's roads.

While many are quick to pick up their phones for a quick look at GPS or social media, police warn these few seconds could result in a serious calamity.

"We remind Albertans that distracted driving can severely limit a driver's ability to focus on driving and road conditions. Make sure to always put electronics away and to be prepared for unexpected actions of other road users and changing driving conditions such as construction," said Supt. Rick Gardner with Alberta Traffic Sheriffs.

Last year during the 2018 Heritage Day long weekend, there were a total of eight fatalities and 39 injuries due to motor vehicle collisions in Alberta. Even though the stats don't lie, people are still known to play with fire on Alberta's roads. "From January to June 2019, 5,063 distracted driving-related tickets were issued in Alberta RCMP jurisdictions. These high-risk driving behaviours are unacceptable," said Supt. Gary Graham with Alberta RCMP Traffic Services. "Travelling safely from one location to another on our roadways is a shared responsibility: Whether someone is an experienced driver or a new one, we all need to work together to keep our roads safe."

Some safety tips for road users to keep on the forefront while travelling:

  • During construction season, follow all road signage to be prepared for speed changes and lane closures.
  • Motorcyclists and cyclists should always ensure they are wearing the proper protective gear.
  • For drivers new to Alberta, always ensure that you know and are following the rules of the road as they can differ from country to country and even province to province.

Just remember to slow down, use caution and reach your campsite, lake lot, or cottage safely this long weekend, and once you do, enjoy yourself.
