A grassroots movement pushing the NDP government to call for a referendum for a proposed provincial carbon tax will culminate in the Alberta Wide Rally this weekend.

The peaceful protest takes place at 12 locations across Alberta Nov. 5 from noon-2 p.m. including the McDougall Centre at 455 6th Street S.W. in Calgary.

The group is collecting petition signatures “to urge the Government of Alberta to hold a province-wide plebiscite on the question of whether the people of Alberta support the Climate Leadership Implementation Act”, according to a pres release issued Nov. 2.

“The response we are getting is spectacular,” said managing director, Todd Beasley, who will be one of the speakers at the Brooks location.

The list of speakers at the Calgary location include Prasad Panda, Wildrose MLA Calgary-Foothills; Calgary rally organizing member Michelle Stirling; Ken Gregory from the Friends of Science Society; and Orion Fike from Oil People Helping Oil People. This location will be emceed at Dwayne Croteau.

Organizers are requesting non-perishable food bank donations from those attending the rally; Calgary will also accept donations for the Fourth Annual Veteran’s Food Drive.

The province-wide event is a coming-together for those who feel negatively affected by NDP policies. It’s the backbone of such movements as Unite the Right – seeking to unite the PC and Wildrose parties under one conservative umbrella.

Cochrane Coun. Morgan Nagel attended last weekend’s Wildrose AGM in Red Deer and will be attending the PC leadership forum this coming weekend, also in Red Deer.

Nagel said the more events he attends, the more he is hearing support for a merger of the two parties.

“Bringing the two parties together is the most important thing,” said Nagel. “I like to think that once Kenney wins the (PC leadership), fingers crossed, that he and (Wildrose leader) Brian Jean will come together.”
