On Oct. 23, Canadian Blood Services invites Cochranites to roll up their sleeves and donate the greatest gift of all.

From 3 to 8 p.m. at Cochrane Alliance Church (902 Glenbow Dr.), the public can donate their blood.

The volume of a single whole blood donation is about 480 ml or less than 10 percent of a donor’s total blood volume. One person can donate whole blood up to six times a year, improving the quality of life for as many as 18 people.

Blood and blood components are used to treat a number of injuries and illnesses including various forms of cancer, hip and joint conditions, transplants, traumas such as car accidents, blood disorders and many others. Canadian Blood Services recruits voluntary donors and collects whole blood at over 36 permanent sites and approximately 14,000 clinics each year, according to their website. 1,600 new donors are needed every week.

Canadian Blood Services manages the national supply of blood, blood products and stem cells, and related services for all the provinces and territories (excluding Québec). The organization provides an integrated, interprovincial system for organ donation and transplantation nationwide.
