Effective March 1, 2020, the Calgary Catholic School District (CCSD) will welcome Dr. Bryan Szumlas as the new superintendent and chief executive officer.

"This is truly the achievement of a long-term goal," expressed Dr. Szumlas.

Szumlas will replace current chief superintendent, Gary Strother, who after eight years with the CCSD announced his retirement back in June 2019.

Currently Dr. Szumlas works as an Area Director with the Calgary Catholic. Since 1990, he has been employed with CCSD and has worked in several different outlets including classroom teacher, assistant principal, supervisor of teaching and learning, and director with instructional services. Szumlas is a graduate of the University of Calgary (B.Ed., M.Ed., Ed.D.) and has made countless educational presentations at the local, provincial, national and international levels. A well known feat of his is having chaired the Alberta Assessment Consortium.

"It is with utmost humility that I face the challenging task of providing administrative leadership to the largest Catholic division in the province. Every recommendation we make as a senior administrative team to our board must be rooted in the question, how does this impact students in the classroom?"

Following a nation-wide search to find the perfect candidate, the board of trustees is pleased with their selection in Dr. Szumlas.

"The priority for the board has been in finding an individual with a deep faith commitment, strong education credentials, broad exemplary professional experiences, and who possesses the personal attributes and leadership qualities capable of moving forward an organization that already enjoys an excellent reputation provincially," said Mary Martin chair of the board of trustees. "The ideal candidate profile establish by the board through extensive consultation with stakeholders was exacting. The board of trustees is confident that it has found this individual in Bryan Szumlas."

The board is positive that Szumlas will continue to represent the Division in excellent nature all while executing educational leadership.
